The medieval period in history was between the 5th and 15th centuries. Also called the Middle Ages, it was a time of change in Western Europe. It began with the fall of the Roman Empire to invading German tribes.
The medieval period, also known as the Middle Ages, was the era between ancient and modern times. Before medieval times, all of western Europe was part of the Roman Empire. Exact dates for the beginning and end of these eras do not exist. Rather the fall of the Roman Empire happened over a period of several hundred years as the Roman Empire weakened and Germanic tribes from the Scandinavian regions were able to conquer, eventually leading to a new way of life.

The medieval period in history is divided into basically two parts. One, the dark ages and two, what is commonly known as the middle ages and by some the high middle ages.
The total medieval period began in the year 476 A.D. with the fall of the last Western Roman Emperor-Flavius Romulus Augustulus at the hands of his army commander in chief-Odaeccer.
The dark ages ended officially with the battle of Hastings in 1066 A.D. when William the Conquerer displaced the Saxon kings with his own Norman dynasty.
The Middle Ages(Medieval Period) itself ended with the fall of Constantinopal which was taken from the last Bzantine Emperor-Constantine XI (Dragonis) by the Ottoman Sultan-Mohommad II (The Conquerer) on Thursday the 29th of May 1453 A.D.
Therefore the whole period lasted from the year 476 A.D. till 1453 A.D. (That is 977 years). Hope this helps.

That isn't a very easy question to answer, as there is still some confusion and interpretation as to when they began and exactly when they ended.
It is believed they began when the last Western Roman emperor abdicated in 476 AD, but by that time Germanic tribes had already whipped out much of Roman civilization. Rome itself was sacked in 410.
It is believed they ended in the middle of the fifteenth century with the growth of printing, developed by the printing press in 1445, the age of exploration; witch proved the world wasn't flat, the rise of the middle class and pursuit of knowledge.
There was also the changing belief about the individual being more important than serving king and country, witch gave rise to the Renaissance after 1400.

According to Wikipedia, it ended with the death of the Roman Empire. It probably got its start in the middle of the first millenium and lasted until the 15th century.
