This is the state motto of the State of new Hampshire in the USA.

It means that you would rather die than have to give up your freedom or subject yourself to tyranny.

The guys who settled New Hampshire were a pretty tough and independent crowd!

I think there is a tradition that this statement comes from an older document called the Declaration of Arbroath that was created back in the middle ages. When Braveheart (William Wallace) was fighting to free Scotland from English domination, after he died the Scottish noble signed an agreement that they would all fight together to defy the English. The document says, "It is not for riches or Honor that we fight, but for freedom and freedom alone, which no true man surrenders but with his life!"

Pretty cool.
