Actually it depends on the car. Anything 1990 and up it isnt recomended because the fuel pump in the tank needs the small ammount of pressure that builds in the tank to help push the fuel to the engine. removing the cap while the engine is running causes the pump to work waaayyy too hard and it will stop working alltogether. HOWEVER on older cars this isnt an issue and to leave it running while fueling is only as dangerous as the person doing the fueling. I wouldnt let the fuel overflow onto the exhaust pipe or smoke while I was fueling. No cell fones either.

It's true, the engine running while filling up gas can cause a static electricity charge to cause a fire, resulting in the explosion of your gas tank, and possibly your death. For some reason when the gas tank comes in contact with the metal of the nozzle from the fuel pump, there is a slight chance that the combination of the air in the tank along with the two metals that can cause an electrical reaction.

You will be in effect be wasting a small amount of fuel as you are paying for more. More seriously there could be gas vapour around that could ignite if an electical spark should be emitted from the engine for any reason. It also makes sense to turn off the car lights and radio etc.,

Not just bad, but against the law. There are many sources of possible spark, but the worst problem is probably the exhaust, which can be red-hot on an idling car. That is enough to cause a major fire and/or explosion if there is a gas spill of any size.

Fact

Fact - as a spark and it can go boom. It is the fumes and not the gas so if it is a shirt that gives you a charge and you turn and set a spark toward the gas hose - then boom. Very very rare for either you or the running car to do this but - it is fact.

Very true fact. Static electrcity is a funny little animal, you can't be sure when it may strike so take all the precautions necessary to avoid serious injury.

1. Newer ('96 and up) will set a code, and check engine light will come on if the filler cap is open on a running engine.
2. It may blow up regarless of age.
Is any of the options "good"? You decide...
