A prom is a dance where everyone gets really dressed up. It is a really formal affair and you go out to eat with friends or your date before the dance. A prom party is just where everyone goes to someone's house afterwards and hangs out. THe flower isn't a necessity, but it is just a tradition for the boy to get the girl a flower.

In the United States, Canada, The Isle of Wight, and most recently the United Kingdom, a prom, short for promenade, is used to describe a formal dance held at the end of an academic year. In the United Kingdom, the term is more widely understood to be in reference to a season of classical concerts or "proms", which have been held between July and September since 1895, today run by the BBC. The British synonym for the North American event would be Leavers' Ball, Leavers' Dinner or informally Leavers' Do, closer to the Australian description (see below.) In Canada the terms Grad or Formal are most common and the event is usually only held for those in their graduating year of high school.

Proms are formal dances traditionally held for the senior class at many high schools. They're usually prior to graduation, sort of like a final party for the graduating class.
Girls wear dresses because it's tradition & the dances are formal, so the boys wear tuxedos as well.
They're usually preceded by dozens of pictures & maybe going out to dinner, & followed by a post-prom party, often at a hotel. Many seniors anticipate their senior prom for years.

it's a high school dance for upper class men (jr.'s and seniors) it's formal and a waste of money. there are two nights a women dreams and plans for; her prom and her wedding. sadly a prom never goes over well, it becomes a popularity contest. obviously I had a crappy time at my prom, but really the biggest SW concert was the same night. any way it's a dance.

In the U.S., it's a dinner dance where boys and girls dress up and go on a "formal date" with the rest of their classmates.
The word "prom" comes from the French "promenade" which literally translates to "take for a walk" but what it really means is "go out and see and be seen". "Marcher" means "to walk"; "Promener" means "to walk for show".
The "prom" of American high schools is a "showing off" event. You show off your dress/tux/corsage/date/dancing prowess.
