Unless you are born into a film family, you are going to need to go to college. The three best are NYU, USC, and UCLA. NYU is in Manhattan, NYC, and the other two are in southern California. Only UCLA is a public university, yet you need to live in California for a certain amount of time before you could declare residency and reduced college tuition.

STAY AWAY FROM HOLLYWOOD.
Seriously, the talent pool there is stale and stagnant and lame. And a lot more people are noticing.
Try to get roles with local indie filmmakers. There are plenty of aspiring filmmakers who just need good actors to tell great stories, and together you'll rise the top (not unlike Harvey Keitel and Martin Scorcese did for each other).
Reality check: Hollywood is an insider's market. Either you have a connection already in place or you aren't going to make it. Or you will need to spend all your waking moments pursuing those connections, leading a shallow and phony life, becoming part of the same stale pool that's already in abundance there.
There's a serious indie filmmaking renaissance about to hit, and the best thing you can do is get yourself some good film work with a real, low budget indie filmmaker.
Or move to L.A. and pursue a career in food services.

The Motion Picture industry is located in New York City (600 films currently shooting) and Los Angeles.
Take your pick of city.

California. Go to a lot of auditions. Take acting classes. Get really good at handling rejection. Another side project that would be good to have would be writing. Write your own movies to star/act in. It's basically networking and making a name for yourself - there isn't a short-cut.
