Because it outlines a form of government that is almost perfect. The problem is most people don't understand the true meaning and until we all understand it we are subject to exploitation. What it allows for is profound. A grand government who should possess a humble and knowing overview and direction to support and protect many states that can be as diverse as our imagination can create. Its sad that people have been so uncreative and fearful in our creation of states so that they are all very similar. The grand problem is the breech of church and state and until we realize a way to break this down we are subject to moralistic ruling. Instead of what the people really want and need as a state.

It also specifically defines the powers of each branch of our government, establishes the structure of our government, and ensures certain rights. Our Constitution (in the United States) also provides a way in which it can be changed, called amendments. It is difficult to change the Constitution to protect it from the fickle will of public opinion. It is essentially the basis of all law in the United States.

In theory, it's the law of the land. It guarantees freedom to people, but only if it's followed strictly.
