They are trying to make you upset, self-conscious, and anxious. They show that they have power over your behavior and can make people do what they want, but they never want you to anything good. They get people to show the worst part of themselves. A smart man is not fooled. There are a number of ways of dealing with this behavior, like ignoring them as if you did not hear them or redirecting the conversation, which is using ignoring and something active.

If you have to tear someone else down in order to build yourself up then you are in big trouble.
