I have a desktop that has XP Pro and 512mb of system memory. When I went to "My Computer" and right clicked to check memory it stated 448MB. I just installed 2 1GB sticks and the system still states 448MB of memory. Confused on what to try now. Thanks.

The momry is a direct Kingston replacement (KVR400X64C3A/1G) VS. (KVR400X64C3A/256)
So I have to assume its ok with the mobo.

More info please what kind of mobo and what kind of memory(ddr, ddr2)? Did ya shutoff the computer when you installed them. I think you need a fresh format and reinstall winxp pro
