I seem to have a fault with my product SONY DVD Recorder RDR-GX120. If I record anything over the SP record mode setting (anything more than 2 hours) it wont record to disc. In particular it wont finalise, and once you have attempted to do so the disc becomes obsolete and un-recognisable. I have also tried various DVD's but no luck, yet they seem to work when recording on SP (2hours).

Call Sony support. This looks like way too major a bug, so maybe there is something wrong with the drive. Check also Sony for firmware downloads for your model.

Make sure you use the recommended DVD format (especially, their X speed)

Side note: Your DVD records in DVD+R format. Usually there is NO need to finalize +R discs unless you don't record in standard DVD-video format.

I had similar probelm with my Sony RDR-VX500. When I called Sony they told me I was using the wrong speed. 16x or 32x will only work in your computer. Separate units require the slower 8x speed. A little harder to find. Try your local office supply store.
