I went to back out of my driveway today and it felt like I hit something, the back right tire seemed to lock up. It will go backwards a few feet and then the tire will lock, if you press the gas, it feels like the brakes or emergency brake is locked on to it. So, by pressing the gas in reverse, the tire just slides. So I had it towed to a mechanic, they just called me and said that it is the transmission! I mean, 1st, it is a front wheel drive ford windstar, 2001. So why would they say transmission if the back tire locks up, 2nd, they said that the brakes are fine? What the hell should I do? I am not up for spending 4000$ on a transmission! Does this sound right that it would be the transmission? Any help would be great!

Run don't walk away from this place.
I mean get your van asap
Being a mechanic myself these people are trying to rip you off.
If the back wheel locked it could be the break or the rear wheel bearing .
It has nothing to do with the trans. As you said it is a front wheel drive and has what is called a free wheel in the back. Meaning it has no power applied to the wheels.
Get it back NOW

A front wheel drive cars transmission WILL NOT lock up the rear tire! You are right in your suspicion that isn't correct. $4000.00 for another trans is VERY VERY high! Sounds like the mechanics are high too!! Ask them if its made out of Gold!
If your back wheel is locking up it has to be a brake problem. Sounds like the brake shoes are out of place or there is some kind of debris in the wheel assembly itself to prevent it from turning.

Bigger wheels take more power to spin. The transmission was made for a specific type tire so anything other than that will make your ride rougher. As for actually hurting the axle, it wouldn't put enough strain on it to wear it out any faster than with the original wheel sizes. It sounds like it's hurting the transmission if shifting into reverse jerks the tires.

if they claim it is the transmission and the rear wheel is FOR SURE the one locked up then take it to a different shop because they are idiots

If the emergency brake was not engaged before you tried to leave this morning then it would not be the emergency brake since it is on a cable.

Sounds fishy, get a second opinion

My guess would be that a brake part, in the locking rear wheel, is wedging itself where it can stop rotation. It may have fallen out, hence, brakes now work. The tranny repair sounds like a snow job. Take it somewhere else, tell them only the original problem and see what they say.

I'll say this as nicely as I can.

"They're IDIOTS!"

Sounds like a wheel bearing froze up on you.
