See if you can improve the ram. Based on the slow speed of the processor, don't go over 1024MB. Upgrading the processor is possible, but would require opening the laptop. If browsing and school work is all you want, consider only putting those applications on. Try keeping the hard drive clean so nothing like spyware aquires. Consider Ghosting the hard drive right after a fresh install of Windows. This is when Windows will perform the fastest. Whenever it starts to get sluggish, backup your school work and pop in the CD. It will bring you to a brand new system in less than 1 hr without having to go thru Windows install! You should be able to enjoy it for those abilities. My laptop is 1.5Ghz Centrino with 1024MB RAM running Windows Tablet. Keep it free of clutter and it will perform like the first day you got it!

Well, this may not be your issue but it is one that seems to plauge HP laptops. Mine gets the fans clogged.
I have to take the cover off over them and clean the junk out about once every 6 months or they get so clogged the machine shuts down with heat! I can begin to tell its time when things start "slowing down" Seems the processor is set to slow down as the temprature comes up in order to protect itself. Once the fans are clean it goes back to working well. If your laptop's slowdowns and shutdowns come after you have been running a bit, check them for clogs! You can also usually feel the heat around the CPU on the bottom, if it is uncomfortable to touch (beyond just being warm) the fans are clogged!

If the issue persists, I recommend you to perform the hard drive selftest:
We can try the following steps to check the condition of the hard drive using the built-in hard drive test on HP notebook PCs:
1. Restart the computer.
2. Press and hold down the F10 key before anything is displayed on the screen.
3. Use the arrow keys to highlight the TOOLS tab in the setup menu.
4. Use the arrow keys to select Hard Drive Self Test from the menu.
5. Press the ENTER key to start the test.
NOTE: The QUICK Hard Disk test takes less than 1 minute to complete. A Quick Test Status is displayed when the test completes: Pass - The hard drive is not damaged. Fail - The hard drive is damaged and may need to be replaced.
The Long Hard Disk Test will take around 2 hours of time.

See if you have the CD that comes with your computer. HP has this "system recovery" program which they give to you with your PC. This CD completely reinstalls windows and makes it as if you just bought your computer. *Note: it deletes everything on your hard drive, so back up what you need.* If you have the CD, boot from the CD by changing your BIOS settings so that it attempts to boot from a CD before anything else. Then stick in your CD, and restart your computer. If everything goes well, then HP's system recovery will boot up. With that, you'll be able to restore your computer. If your computer is still slow after doing that, it's probably a hardware problem.
Good luck!

defragment the hard drive. Or you could just buy a Mac. (they never slow down, and they don't get viruses, and they look cool, and they are super fast, and the OSX operating system rocks!
Good Luck!

youre putting too much stuff on your system. antispyware/virus, they take alot of space. get an extra harddrive because most performance issues start with very little free space. delete some stuff you don't need anymore.
