Stephen King's Rose Red
Hostel
The Descent
Rose Red is the scariest of those three. But its long, yet totally worth every terrifying second.

Try The Eye. I watched it on my own, in the dark, late at night, when I really needed sleep. At one point I actually thought it might be TOO scary and I have a really strong stomach for horror!
Also try: The Ring Trillogy (in Japanese of course not the remade nonsense!), Quatermass And The Pit (Hammer's best ever film!), the original Nosferatu, for a comedy with a genuinely creepy edge watch Deathline and for a scary TV series try Chris Morris' masterpiece Jam.
If you've never seen it Apocolypse Now is really scary in a different way ("The horror, the horror")
EDIT: Oh yeah, we forgot to say Night Of The Hunter with Robert Mitchum is a real heart stopper! And Crawlspace. A crazy Nazi I can take but played by Klaus Kinski is too much for my fragile human mind to handle!

Well not to offend any of those who posted but i wouldn't ever recommend any of them being scary... Any new horror film is usually pretty lame i haven't seen a good scary film in ages that's been made in the past 8 years. The only film that's been remotely close to scaring me but totally disturbed a few of my friends was a film called "The Eye" its a Japanese film so be prepared for subtitles but don't let this put you off, i can see another American rip off this coming out in the next few years just like the "The Ring" and "Dark Water"

Try the original of The Hills Have Eyes or First House On The Left, I think they're John Carpenter films and also the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre.

The Shining is the only film that still gives me chills. Watch it alone at night, lights off, volume up. The ambience of it, like the film itself is posessed, it crawls under your skin. May not be faithfuk to the book... it's better!
Or Severance is kinda scary and hilarious too. Surprise me, the balance it had.
Other than that, scary movies just aren't scary anymore. They are all cheap scares! Big noises and screams....

Welli would recommend a British film called CREEP.
It's about a girl (Franke Potente - The Bourne Identity series) who gets stuck on the London underground after it closes and she is not alone, something or someone is stalking her.
I must warn you that a strong stomach is needed for this one

hmmmm...................there arent many films out there that "scare" people nowadays per se. Mostly they are thrillers which make you jump and thats it really.....but some films if you watch them with lights off an by yourself can be scary....
Films such as these are
The Descent, Psycho, Poltergiest, Amityville Horror is good,
new films are not really scary but the exorcism of emily rose IS scary.
Hope tht helps

The Thing with Kirk Russell.
I don't normally go for scary films - but this one is scary with some dark humour too.
