Ok, so baking soda and vinegar both deodorize right? So can I make a room smell fresh by mixing the two in a big cup in the middle of a room, or deodorize a container fast by mixing the two?

Mixing the two will give you a mini volcano eruption.

I asked the same question once...whether these two powerhouse substances are better together. The answer is no. After all the foamy hullabaloo, after the molecules are re-situated, the yield of these two ingredients is basically water. Water is wonderful in its own right but it won't deodorize the way either one does separately.

What I would do is sprinkle baking soda on the carpet, let it rest a while, like an hour? and then vacuum it up. If there is still an odor lingering, boil a 50-50 mix of water and white vinegar and set the pan in the middle of the room to evaporate into the air. By the time the water cools down the odors should be gone. If you like, you can add some essential oil like lavender, to the vinegar water mix after you take it off the heat.

This should take care of the problem.

The exception is if you need the reaction to knock something loose. That boiling action is great when you have a slow or clogged drain. Pour a box of baking soda down the drain first, dry, then add a trickle of vinegar (hot vinegar is better) until all the foaming stops. Follow with hot water. Your drain clog should be gone.

Vinegar and baking soda are both really good for a lot of the same things, but sometimes one is better than the other. Vinegar is great when you can get something wet, obviously, and baking soda for fabrics, paper, and books, etc that have to stay dry. You can use baking soda as a scouring powder (great with bleach as a paste). One distinction is that baking soda used wet, needs to be rinsed thoroughly or else you have a powdery residue on things.

I don't think the vinegar is needed. Baking soda is a great deodorizer by itself. Plus if you mix the two it will make CO2 gas and make a mess. Think of those volcanoes you made in science class as a kid. Just sprinkle the baking soda on the floor and let it sit for a little while, then vacuum it up.

Yes. on the container, probably not on the room If you put an open box of baking soda in your fridge it will absorb odors, but that's a smaller, enclosed space, a whole room is a different thing. You might have to be a little more aggressive with that one

I have soaked pickle jar lids in that solution so that I could reuse the jars for non pickle items.

If you put a tablespoon of baking soda down your drains followed by a half a cup of vinegar once a month your drains will not smell and they will stay clear,

Ok! Here's whatcha do! - 2 Tbsp. baking soda in one cup - 4 Tbsp. vinegar in another cup I tested this in advance to see that when mixed the bubbles filled the cup, but didn't overflow. In front of each child, I put the cup with the vinegar on top of a paper towel. Then I asked them to make observations about what was in the cup. Q: What does it look like? What does it sound like? What does it *smell* like? A: It looks and sounds like water. It smells yucky, like oil (sometimes it is mixed with oil and put on salads), like stinky socks (maybe your socks!)... I told them that it was vinegar. Most had never heard the word. I really wanted to tell them what vingar was, but I didn't know, so I settled for reading the ingredients. I talked about some uses of vinegar and we had a great discussion of pickles and what people did before they had refridgerators. Then we passed out the cups of baking soda, and told them to wait until everyone had one, and on the count of three they could pour all the baking soda into the vinegar. Wow! We got them to talk about what happened. Some cups overflowed. There were bubbles. What's in a bubble? We talked about the difference between solid, liquid and gas. (I wish I had known better definitions of these, but we muddled through it.) Next we did another experiment that I told them I had never tried before. I put vinegar in the bottle and baking soda in the balloon, then fastened the balloon over the mouth of the bottle and mixed the two. The balloon inflated about half way and the kids were wildly impressed. Everyone wanted to feel the balloon. We repeated the experiment with more baking soda and more vinegar and saw the ballon inflate even more. We had just enough time (and baking soda and vinegar) to let everyone mix them again themselves. We didn't measure so precisely this time, so there were more overflows, but that just added to the fun.

Vinegar and baking soda together cause a chemical reaction (think the volcano in chemistry class). You can mix, but expect a reacion of foam--and I doubt they would deodorize much together.
