All I can think of is the fontanel / fontanelle, which is a soft spot on a baby's skull which has to be treated with extreme care. http://www.drhull.com/EncyMaster/F/fontanelle.html

The occipital bone forms the base of the skull. The bone that holds it in place on the spine and somewhat "cradles it" I guess would be the atlas, which is the first cervicle vertibrae.

If you mean the bit in the middle that's soft at birth and gradually hardens then it's the fontanelle.

I'm not sure I understand your question. Do you mean the soft part of a baby's cranium? That's the fontanelle.
