They were talking on the radio today about when "women rate other women." Appearance, clothing hem line, etc. etc. I know that I do not "rate" anyone, but the women at my job say they rate all other women they see. Sort of like "sizing up the enemy." Because the woman on the radio saw a woman in a mall wearing short-shorts and high heels. Felt it was wrong. Wanted listener's opinions.

Since I am told that women really worry about what other women look like, can you tell me WHY they care? Especially if the person is a stranger you will probably never see again?

1.)Women are insecure. I think deep inside they feel threatend by women who dress provocative. Or #2.) Once a woman has a child her views about right and wrong are more pronounced and it's like some natural defense to protect their children from images they feel are sexual or demoralizing. (so they *****) #3.) They want to save the freakin world and all women think that they are "right". They want us to send the "right" messages to our children and everyone else. We are control freaks.

Once I saw a young woman walking around the shopping centre and she was wearing stilletos, small top and shorts that were so high cut, her bum cheeks were clearly visable.
Of course she had a fantastic figure, and I thought good on her for making the most of it, but, there are things that are acceptable/unnacceptable in society and wearing clothes in public that show a normally covered up part of your body will raise some eyebrows, and I really do not care what others think, this girl did look skanky, it's just poor taste.
But, while I'm entitled to think what I like, it is her body and she can do as she pleases.

I've got a sister and a mother like that. I'd say that's accurate of about half the women I know. It's because they internalize the social standard that women are meant to serve certain purposes and as part of that service should always be attractive, young, slender, well dressed, manicured, etc. What I consider to be artificial feminization through beauty products and similar alterations. And as part of this feminized consumerism, they compete with each other in a daily beauty contest. If they don't have the attention, approval and adoration of men, then they have failed. They see women who don't measure up as losers, and equally or more attractive, feminized consumer women as competition. It's a socially ingrained competition for mates, even amongst women who have already caught a mate. They are constantly told, through marketing and popular media, that they must attract and hang on to male attention and care and they must do that by achieving a certain look. They internalize this competition. When they see other women they size her up. It's fear really.

I've been wondering this lately too. I've seen a lot of talk on the women's studies board about how women dress, the ones who dress like "sluts," and how they don't deserve respect. I've been surprised by how many women will back up a statement like that. Personally, I'll treat anyone with respect and decorum, if that's how they treat me, irregardless of what they happen to be wearing. It is something (some) women do. I think a lot of it is tired, old moral outrage, and a lot of it just people trying to make themselves feel better by putting others down.

Given that so much of a woman's worth in this culture is based on their appearance, it's easy to understand why women are more likely to fixate on that, and use it as a way to put others down.

Sizing up... I think some women do it out of insecurity, some with a specific purpose. I think it's a subconscious thing where they know whomever gets the best rating wins. Even in the smallest things. Like a gentlemen giving up his space for you in line at the supermarket. Men are more likely to act accordingly to what they see then women generally do. Eventhough they harbor the same principles. It's just more obvious.

Mature women don't 'rate' other women. Mature grown-ups have better things to do.

The only time I ever take a second glance is out of shock and awe - like when I see the boys wearing their pants so low they can barely walk anymore. They look like they are wearing diapers and lugging around a big, fat wet one in their pants. Newsflash: bad taste and no class is not limited to females.

If I saw some woman in short shorts and high heels , I would laugh. I mean, How skanky is that???? On the other hand, when I see a woman all decked out in Versace ad carrying a Marc Jacobs bag, , I think,
" Right on, Sister! Looking fine ".

So, rating can also be a form of simple admiration. It has nothing to do with jealousy.

If a woman feels like she is competing with other women, and views them as the enemy then there is something lacking in herself.

Not all women "rate" other women as far as clothing, appearance, etc. Women who feel competitive about how they rate in appearance, compare themselves to others and judge them. Since society and media place such emphasis on style and appearance, girls grow up under pressure to conform. Women feel pressure to look young to be desireable to men.

Men may also "rate" other men as far as height, fitness, hair, displays of wealth, and how their date "rates".
