Me and my husband are buying a house in the next few weeks. Many of the properties we are looking at don't have fenced backyards or they are too short (we have athletic large dogs). The dogs won't be outside under supervised. We need to be able to sell the house ASAP in 4 years when I'm done with vet school, so what would be the best ROI on fencing: chain link or wood privacy? I'm also considering bamboo, but not sure how that would hold up. None of the properties seem to have restrictions on wood privacy vs. chain link.

Alrighty, wood it is! Anyone have any further commentary on bamboo fencing? How well would it hold up to dogs? What about pricing and ROI?

I have had a 6 foot wooden fence for the past 20 plus years and I wouldn't have a chain link fence if you paid me too. I like the privacy of the wooden fence. Either that or a cinder block wall of some type would be nice. I've had dogs and it was easier to keep them in and secure, plus they didn't bark at everything that passed by.
I have an alley behind my home and a neighbor across the alley has a chain link fence. They have dogs and the dogs can see everything and they are like barking machines, they bark at every one and everything. It's horrible, but they go none stop with the barking. Makes me want to choke the owners of the dogs. It's a rental, over the years it always been the same thing.
Wooden fence is better. Or you can even put up the vinyl fence's as they are really nice too. You won't be disappointed with either wood or vinyl as either will give you lots of privacy and security for your dogs.

PVC! It stays looking good and will last forever. That is my next investment!
I currently have chain link on one side and a wood fence on the other. The wood fence is slowly leaning and each time we have high winds I hope that it doesn't fall over. It also is ugly from being in the weather for 30+ years. I don't have a problem with the chain link since it rests on a cement 1 foot high wall, although I don't have the privacy.

Unless you live in a rural area where your neighbors are out of site, a wooden privacy fence will always be a better value than a chain link fence. But don't take my word for it....ask a realtor....not the one you did business with...for an opinion. I think the privacy fence will add more value to your home.

I wouldn't use either of them. Wood will over time have a tendency to rot, which they could start doing by the time you're looking to sell your house. I would not buy a house with chain link, since I don't care to take it down.
I would look to using a PVC type of fence. They last longer and look better. They will also hold up to German Sheppard and boxer. My boxer used to jump over our 6 foot wooden fence to chase after squirrels. PVC doesn't have the grooves for her footing.

I think aesthetically a wood privacy fence is better and will add to the overall look of your home. Just an opinion.

yes just make sure it's on your property. before you moved in they did a land survey and hung little pieces of ribbons as to where the property lines are. CAN OR DID YOU SEE THEM WHEN YOU FIRST MOVED IN? just don't touch the old fence and it would be a good neighborly gesture if you discuss this with all you immediate neighbors before you do it. not everyone will be happy about it. those fences are party line fences and are usually paid for by all parties that they surround i would think though that YOU ALONE will have to pay for what you want to do. also make sure that the town you live in doesn't have an ordinance against that type of fence. some do. check with your townships office. good luck to ya

I say wood for two reasons. One a chain link dogs can move around easier espacailly if they dig a hole underneath it. It'll bend to let them out. And also wood looks alot better.

my opinion if your going to sale in 4or 5 years I would put up a wood fence and use a good wood sealer, or paint .Depending on the size of your yard. you would save money, and still increace property value.
