Question for the all theatre lovers out there...okay, and maybe the movies too...

Out of all the actors who have played the Phantom (Erik) in the Phantom of the Opera, who is your favourite? Who do you think gives the best performance and why?

Okay, I was just going to ask about the stage actors, but I guess I'll include the movies done as well ( I know most people have seen the 2004 film with Gerard Butler as the Phantom *cough* sexy *cough*)

Just curious...so any of the stage actors or film actors (there are also very old film versions out there)

Gerard Butler hands down for the movie version....i know a lot of people were like "MICHAEL CRAWFORD!" and slammed GB just becuase he wasnt like MC, but i thought his performance was amazing. I've been a huge fan of GB since long before POTO :).

In the stage performances (i've seen POTO twice), I liked the guy who performed the first time I saw it and his name was Hugh Panaro. Though I had balcony seats, i thought he did a wonderful job and I loved his acting.

Hmm...I'd say Gerard Butler was the best. He was way way perfect. But I thought it was uber stupid in the movie when she takes his mask off for the second time and everyone screams. (Call me crazy, but I still think he's pretty darn good looking...the whole deformed face thing wasn't that bad at all...) But yet everyone screams. Weird.

Lon Chaney -- you can't beat the original and the " master of a thousand faces. " of course this was back in 1925 so many would either not remember or have ever heard of him.
