Strongly. Fluids move from areas of high pressure to areas of low pressure. The steeper the gradient, the more strongly the fluid is impelled to move.

This is really a Weather forum question, but a steep pressure gradient in the air means the heavier air will flow down the gradient quicker, gathering speed and producing higher wind velocity.

It is like poking a hole in a baloon. The high pressure in the balloon is seeking to equalize with the low pressure outside the balloon and it rushed out.
