This is a systems of equations.

First, define the variables
Let J = Jorge's current age
Let M = Maria's current age

The first equation is: J+2=3M
The second equation is J+10 = 4M

First, subtract the two equations. You get:

-8 = -M or
M=8

Now substitute that into the first equation, and you get:

J + 2 = (3)(8)
J + 2 = 24
J = 22

Substitute these into the second equation to check your work, and you get: 22+10 = (4)(8) or 32=32 so you have your answer.

jorge in 2 years, j+2. maria now, m. jorge in 10 years, j+10. so the equations say

j+2 = 3m
j+10 = 4m

subtract 1st equation from 2nd:

8 = m
j+2 = 3(8)
j = 22

xanyone, you could've just used J and M like everyone else
no need for x and y

j + 2 = 3m
- j +10 = 4m
-----------------
0 + -8 = -1m

or -8 = -m
which means 8=m or m=8

you now have maria
use the equations to find jorge

first equation:
j+2=3m
j+2=3(8)
j+2=24
-2 -2
j=22

second equation:
j+10=4m
j+10=4(8)
j+10=32
-10 -10
j=22

you get it both ways
j=22 and m=8
jorge is 22 now and maria is 8 now

hope this helped
