I am a Software Engineer, and while it is no where near critical, I do think it has opened doors for me and allowed me to start at a higher position than my peers in some situations. The starting pay was better too.

It's kind of odd----I work next to nurses with masters degrees, but their clinical skills suck.
I just have an associates; & the patients seem to prefer people who just hang out with them, & take care of their emotional needs.
So---what's a nurse to do?! Keep getting more education, just to sit in an office someday?! Or enjoy the status quo...?!

Very! In social psychology, an MA is dime a dozen (esp. in the academe) so am shooting for PhD by 2010...keeping my fingers crossed.

Not very. I worked hard to get where I'm at. No degree was necessary.

Not at all.
In IT, the order of importance is
Experience
followed by experience, then it's
experience, experience, experience.
