I'm 24 & still live at home but will be moving out within the month. I do NOT mooch off my parents though. I'm self sufficient, buy my own stuff, pay my own bills & pay them rent each month. (If they buy anything for me it's cause they insisted. urg.) I just couldn't afford to move out until now because I was finally able to find a few roommates. I say that if the kid is still living there after 21 or 22 then they should pay rent & help out....any time before that shouldn't be necessary cause most people are going to college til about then & are really only "home" during summer break & on holidays....that is, if they're going to a university. If they don't go to college after high school, work & still live w/ the parents then you're dang right they should pay....it's only fair. I say 30 is too old & drawing the line. If someone is still there by then, there's some serious problems goin on!! The only reason they should stay after that age is if it's to help with (a) disabled parent(s)...like what my ex is doing. His mother is unable to walk or even drive cause she's wheelchair-bound so he stays with her to take her places, help with housework, etc.

I moved out on my 19th birthday. Now I live with my bf in the States. I left Europe.
I think that 21 is too old to live with the parents. And yes, I think it would be just right to pay half a rent and help out with the bills.
My older bro is 23 and he still lives at home. He does help pay the bills. So that's good. He even pays for his own car and phone.

I no longer live at mothers house. I live in my own apartmen, pay my own rent and BILLS and have been doing so since I was 20. While I was living with my mother, as soon as I turned 16 I had to get a job, if I didn't have a job, I had to do cleaning to pay the rent. Once I moved out, I felt my source of freedom, and realized that I certainly wouldn't have made it without my mother's support. However, my uncle who is 52 is still living with my grandmother but he keeps house and works. I feel that it depends on how the situation is. If they are moochers, they should be booted to get a taste of the real life. Everybody should get a "taste" of freedom from their parents. I feel that they should pay rent once they get a job. It teaches money statagy and care.

I was 23 when I moved out of my mom's house. I helped her out with bills but she didn't ask me to pay rent or anything. I had been buying all own things (groceries, clothes, etc) since I was in high school so basically she didn't have to pay for anything for me. If it was up to her I'd still be living with her but I wanted to live on my own. I think it's up to the parents to decide if they want the kids to pay rent. I wouldn't make my kids pay me rent just because they were 18 but if they we're well into their 20s they would have to.

I'm moving out next year (at 18), but I will just live in a dorm and live at home on vacations and in the summer. If you're a College graduate and still living at home, then that's too old. Unless you have special needs or something.

I was 19 when I moved out. I think it was a good age to leave home, but I wish I had had more help from my parents with the transition because I made too many costly mistakes. I strongly suggest college dorms over independent living at that age. It's way to easy to get in over your head if you're all alone.

18. I went away to college, was on my own from then on, except for a few months right after I finished school.

At 18, if the kids are working, and living at home, yes, they should pay rent.

-I moved out aout 7 months ago. I'm 22. Since I started working at age 18, I help my mom with her bills. I'm not living at home but I still give her money at least $400 a month. i hope one day I can earn enough money so she don't have to work back again.-

I moved out at 15. And yes, 18 is WAY old enough to leave - at least for males. If they stay, they should pay.

I was just about to turn 19 and I got married two months later

I personally believe that kids should be chipping in around the house from toddlerhood. Whether it be chores or paying for something. Teaches the child that they have to work for the things they need.
