Orpheus had a girlfriend, Eurydice. She died, and he went to the Underworld to find her, and he played such sweet music that Hades let her leave.

On one condition. He couldn't look back until he got to the regular world aboveground.

He couldn't help himself--he sneaked a peek back at her, and she got pulled back to the Underworld.

Moral--if you manage to cheat the natural order by some great love or skill or force of will, you better abide by the conditions they set.

It's rare that people get to undo things like death, and they better appreciate it when they do, and toe the line so that they don't have to deal with fate like everybody else.

Also, it's possible that quite a few people cheat death, but, like Orpheus, they just can't control their impulses and death wins, as usual. Maybe Orpheus wasn't the only guy--he just got a story told about himself.

There are many interpretations. It can be viewed as a metaphor for the triumph of love, the virtue of patience, and there was even a mystery religion based on Orpheus.

Orpheus was willing to descend into the Underworld to bring back the woman he loved, but lost her because he couldn't resist the human impulse to "look back" (in this case, literally).
So I guess the moral is, don't look back.

Sometimes you have to trust the untrustworthy even when it hurts, because the alternative is far worse.

Orpheus lost Eurydece because he looked back to see if she was really following him, even though Hades told him that if he looked back on her she would remain a ghost in Tarturus (hell) forever.

The moral back when the myth was created was probably "don't defy the gods"
