They know they are going in circles, but since they keep the wheel turning, they can't stop. Same as us in life. As long as we keep the wheel spinning, we just go in circles, and for some reason we justify it as fun. So it's not us, but the wheel that is the root of the problem. And it's so shiny, though!

Good question to ask. They have a lot of energy (well most do) and they need some way to release all that energy and running the wheel is the easiest way for them to do this. Beware that with some hamsters they can become obsessed with running on it and die from a heart attack, my son's did just that, he was a dwarf.

I don't really know. What I think though, is that they are so hyper and by running to release energy, they get into this exercising zone. Hope this helps!
