It drives fine otherwise; actually, it's really zippy and fun! So I wouldn't mind (too much) putting a few hundred dollars into it, if that is about what replacing the CV joint will run.

Fix it soon before you find yourself stranded on the road with a bunch of ball bearing floating around. If the thumping noise is only when you start out, or put it in gear it might be a moor mount instead of a CV joint.. Open the hood have someone else (with thier foot on the brake put it in gear if the motor jumps on one side and you hear the thump its a motor mount, which is cheaper and easier to replace.

First and Foremost I have found that Chevy didn't make an 86 Citation, they did in 1985 though according to the parts listing.

Each side at www.partsamerica.com cost $69.88, this is minus delivery and tax.

Changing the CV joint is no longer a viable option. What is done nowadays is the entire drive axle is replaced. This can be done by removing the hub grease cover, and loosing the bolt that holds this axle into place. Next you must remove the tire and the brakes, as well as the the entire front spindle. This can be done by loosening the strut mount bolts. Once the spindle is out of the way, a quick tug on the axle and the entire shaft should come right out. Simply replace with the new re manufactured axle, and put back together. I would suggest getting a manual from you local auto parts store before attempting this. Its not difficult, but if you don;t work on cars then you may not be able to do any of this.

Therefore go to a mechanic, and ask what it costs to replace a front drive axle on your car.

Best o Luck

Get new drive axles before the front wheels fall off causing a lot of damage. Yes they can come off if the CV joints comes apart. You could have a reck and get injured or injure someone else. Don't play with your life and others, get it fixed.

Take your's off, take it in and get a rebuilt one from your favorite parts store, save some money, it's easy to change, just some bolts on both sides, towards the wheel and towards the tranny, compress it a little and it drops out, put it back in in reverse.

this happend to my subaru. You need to get it replaced. I let mine go along with my breaks and while I was at school my brakes litterally fell off. yea not fun. Apparently if I had fixed it priorly to them falling off it would have only run me about 200. but when the damage was done it cost me almost 400. GOOD LUCK!
