I had a car towed in... the advisor told me the camshaft was welded to the journals.. I asked how it could still start up if it was welded, and the advisor said, "The car is running on only 3 cylinders instead of 6. The damage is in the left side where the camshaft locked up." He then told me they sent an oil sample because they don't think the oil was changed properly, and are waiting to hear back from Chrysler on whether or not to void the warranty. He said it's not their decision but Chrysler's decision.

Basically he said the engine is bad, and I'll need a new one. He says its taking so long because he hasn't heard back from Chrysler but he "overnighted" the sample today. Keep in mind my car has been in this shop for almost 2 weeks

Does this make sense? Or should I get a second opinion?

I assume this is the 3.7L Magnum V6 engine you are asking about. I think the discussion about the 'oil not being change properly' is likely FUD. The oil analysis is to see what else is in the oil and perhaps to establish oil type and condition.

It's highly unlikely that a camshaft hung because of an oil change, else both should have died as they are oiled by the same engine lubrication system.

If your oil was change by the dealer or by the same lube shop ( i assume you go to the same places for maintenance and just don't pick places at random), then go to them and ask for complete records of the service they have performed on your vehicle - they have it on a computer somewhere. Don't take no for an answer. The records will show the ID of who worked on the vehicle each time. If they ask, just tell them you are putting your car maintenance on your home computer and are missing some information. That will usually do the trick.

Get your records of maintenance together and build a vehicle maintenance history. Then get your owner's manual out and see what voids the powertrain warranty.

Next go to the dealer service manager who is working on your vehicle and ask to speak to the zone manager for Chrysler. Meet him at the dealership to look at your engine and discuss the issue and the camshaft failure. Ask for a copy of the oil analysis that was performed - don't just take their word for it. Have your maintenance records ready and have them with you. Vehicle maintenance is usually recommended based on use and mileage with some reasonable wide limits. You should be able to prove you did your part.

I'd say that someone besides you is on the hook for a replacement engine or the repairs. This is where your records can make the case. If the wrong oil was put in the engine - the last guy to change the oil is on the hook - oil analysis should tell the story there. If the engine was cranked by accident with no oil in the system, then the last guy to do the oil change is on the hook.

Only you know if the vehicle has been serviced routinely; I hope you've kept records and receipts. If you haven't been as diligent as Chrysler recommends, I'm afraid your up the proverbial creek. Since an oil,smaple has been sent and they're awaiting results, I'd simply wait for their decision - then complain, if you have grounds and proof of proper maintenance.

A second opinion won't change the facts if the engine is trashed. You'll only waste more money, time and other resources. I would wait for Chrysler's decision and then, as i said, contact Customer Service and file a formal complaint (if you can prove the vehicle has been serviced regularly). Good luck!

get a loaner car from them and let them keep it as long as they need to yes it makes sense unless you agree to foot the bill and are willing to wait for any reimbursement

they want to be paid by someone and they are waiting for someone to authorize the bill
