Hi, I quit smoking recently and am retaining water, etc. If I took laxatives or water pills, would they interfere with absorption of the birth control pill? My husband and I are planning to have children the next year or year after... no time soon.

Yes! Anything which causes you to pass food through faster - ie laxatives, having diarrhea etc with mean that the pill is passed through without being absorbed properly. Any day that you have diarrhea or a loose bowel movement you need to count that as a missed pill, same if you vomit etc. Then you need to follow the instructions for what to do when you miss a pill.

A friend of mine got pregnant while on birth control pills - she'd been taking them as regularly as clockwork, but she was also drinking a laxative tea every day to help her lose weight, so her pill was literally going straight through her without being absorbed properly.

I am not sure about laxatives and birth control pills, however, I am very sure that taking daily laxatives are not in your best interests. If you are eating the recommended 7 to 11 servings of fruit and vegetables a day AND if you are eating the recommended 4 to 6 serving of whole grain each day AND if you are getting a minimum of 30 minutes moderate exercise every day, AND are still having constipation problems, go see your doctor!!!!!!! One other cause of constipation is not spending enough time in the bathroom. I strongly recommend that you take a good book or an interesting magazine and do not rush your self.

If you have diarreah, then yes: there's a chance the pill hasn't absorbed into your bloodstream enough to be effective. It would be similar to "missing a pill" - or two, depending on how severe.

A better idea than laxatives or water pills to relieve bloat? EXERCISE (which is good for you anyway), drink plenty of water, and get an adequate amount of fiber from whole, healthy foods (salads, legumes, etc).

And don't ever use laxatives or water pills just to lose weight; they can be quite dangerous; throws your entire system out of whack and deprives you of essential nutrition when abused.

It's not good to take water pills or laxitives for an extended period of time (unless prescribed by your doctor) because your body can easily become dependant on them to function. The easy way to stop retaining water, oddly enough, is to drink more. Your body holds onto (retains) water when you do not drink enough. If you increase your intake of water, within a week or two, your body will start to realize that it doesn't need to hold onto it as much & you will start to shed the water weight. Make sure you are drinking at least 8-10 glasses a day & more if you exercise or if it's hot out.

People who plan their weekly meals tend to be more successful at losing weight than those who don’t. Plan your dishes to add healthy carbs such as nice potato and wholegrain pasta, vegetables and lean proteins, buy each of the ingredients in advance and don’t be tempted you can eat out or order in.

Suck the idea in. Consciously hold in and contract your abdominals while you’re walking, sitting at your desk or making the evening meal. This will help to strengthen your ab muscles and your core, and provide one step closer to any flatter stomach.

Eat muesli two hours before hitting the gym to boost fat burning when you train. Slow to digest, muesli takes longer to get through your system, so is less oftimes be turned into fat and still provides a good energy boost.

Beans, beans, are great for your heart, the more you eat the more you... lose pounds actually. Super-effective and full associated with fibre, beans will regulate your appetite and slow the rate at which your stomach empties, meaning you continue to be fuller for longer.

Eat goats cheese rather then regular cheese. It contains 40 per cent fewer calories than the cheese made from cow’s milk.
