I think is portrayed as real, rather than some idealised version of a woman. Naturally, she is placed in an extremely stressful and depressing position. Even more of a problem, her son's life is at threat -- the suitors' ultimate aim is to seize the throne, and Telemachus is in the way. That she breaks down into tears and despair is only human. Why doesn't she recognize Odysseus? Well, not only have twenty years passed since he left for Troy, but the goddess Athena has cast a spell over him, to make him seem beggarly and mean.
