There is no simple answer to this question, as books have been around for much longer than printing presses and binding.
Early writings were on papyrus or carved into wood slats. The first known textbooks were created in China on slats of wood that could be folded up for storage. Scrolls and carvings eventually were put together in some kind of folder, usually made of wood or animal skins, and eventually the individual pages were sewn into a kind of binding.

People have been writing stories and recording information in various forms for thousands of years, but the first man to print books the way we know them was Gutenburg. He invented the printing press during the European Renaissance and started by printing the Bible. However, he took his inspiration from the Chinese, who also used movable type. And before movable type, monks in Europe laboriously copied and translated texts over and over again and bound them.

Nobody knows for sure. Furthermore, it depends on what you mean by book. Do scrolls and clay tablets count? I'm assuming that by "book" you mean written records, and by that criterion the sages of Tibet get the credit. Sanskrit is the oldest written language we know of. There may very well have been earlier ones, but if so, no records have survived, or else we haven't discovered them yet. Hope that helps ya!

The purpose of a book is to preserve knowledge. The Monks were the best at that. They painstakingly copied works and stored them away. If it was not for the monks much of what we know today would have been lost to the dark ages. I think it is safe to say the monks did.
