The Giver by Lois Lowry.
That was a good book.
A boy named Jonas starts seeing flashes of red, and he is the next person to receive memories from the Giver and eventually he will become the Giver to the next receiver to prevent the utopian community from seeing the negative world outside.
I read it in 7th grade.

It is the story of a boy named Asher and he is very talented amongst his community. He learns from the Giver and he can turn things into color, like an apple. The book is great and I would reccomend it to and 8th grader and below. But nothing lower than a 6th grader. The book is called The Giver by Lois Lowry.

It sort of sounds like The Giver by Lois Lowry. In The Giver the main character starts seeing flashes of color in his black and white world. That is how his society determines that he is going to be the next repository of the society's memories. There is also a bit in there about babies, one of which he attempts to save.

The descriptions not exactly the same but they are very close.

This sounds kind of similar to The Giver by Lois Lowry. It is one of those books that you have to read in 8th grade.
