Do you have a contract that spells out payment terms? I assume if its a big company then it may be in their payables department and could take 30 - 90 days to receive payment. If you are really concerned, I would suggest contacting a lawyer or calling the firm directly and politely inquire on the payment status. Good Luck!

Do you have a PO(purchase order) from them. Try requesting that next time. It makes it easier to deal with the accounting department later. Also make it clear before you start work that you'll only gave them like 2 weeks credit, meaning if you're owe more than 2 weeks back paid, you'll stop work until you're paid.

Unfortunately, you are not an employee, so your rights are limited. It's like if you don't pay your plummer. All he can do (legally) is sue you. And that's all you can do too. No fines or late fees I'm afraid.

You said contractor, then you mention your employer. If your an employee, then he needs to pay. But if your an outside contractor, you haven't even given him 30 days yet. And some general contractors pay every 60. If you really are a contractor, then what does you contract say. And if you don't have a contract, hope he pays you because it could get messy if he don't.

First of all, wage and hour laws vary by state. Second, you indicated that you were contract and that might take you out of the category of employee. Independent contractors typically have less protection than employees.

You really need to consult a local attorney because law do very so much.

Is there a timeline specified in your contract? If not, definitely get that in writing for next time. If not, you probably need to look into your state laws. Have you already followed up with the payroll or accounting department to check on it? I would start there. Maybe they only cut checks like this once a month.
