House flies will lay eggs in food and decaying organic matter, like roadkill or meat tossed in the garbage. The eggs will hatch into lots and lots and lots of maggots which soon become more flies.

I've always lived in the city with plumbing but on vacations we'd go out to the "sticks" and have to use the outhouse. Oh, jez. It was an experience not to be missed. Some of them put toilet seats over the hold (so you could close the lid). Other places just had the hole and time had worn the edges round. Flies and stink. I've read stories where people hide inside the hole in outhouses--and I have a very difficult time thinking how far things would have to get for me to jump down in there. And I remember as a child being sent off to summer camp and we had to clean the outhouses (Pinesol)--isn't that wonderful to make a child do, and then wash your hands in at a pump. Indoor plumbing is one reason I would never want to go too far back in time--I seriously appreciate running water, flush toilets, hot water at my fingertips, porcelain.

There are plenty of garage flies, yard flies, and my all time favorite, super sly street flies.
