...in the NHL, do you think Wayne Gretzky would have scored 100+ goals in a season if he were playing today (he scored 92 once)?

I lived in Edmonton through the Gretzky years and for those of you that missed it, I feel for you. Clutch and grab was an integral part of the NHL in those years and every team had someone to shadow Wayne and he still"managed " to score 92 goals one year. The game now is nowhere near to the obstruction of yesteryear, that is why the rules were changed, geez louise, guys can stand in front of the net all day now and if the defensemen touch the guy, a penalty is called. Wayne faced the same critics at every stage of his career and still shone head and shoulders above most. I remember sitting right behind the Houston Aero bench and overhearing Gordie Howe talking with one of his teammates after a Gretzky rush and all i heard was the admiration for Wayne's talent. It is so tough to compare generations against one another but in all my years of watching and playing, Wayne is in the top 3 or 4 of all time. I put Orr first because he did it all on bum knees and still won 2 scoring titles as a defenseman, I put Wayne second with Gordie and Mario close behind. And Gretzky would score 100 goals in todays NHL because the ice is even more open now then it was then and he was the best at anticipating where the play was heading. Can you imagine the points he and Kurri would have racked up, not to mention Paul Coffey, Mark Messier and Glenn Anderson.

If anything, Gretzky's total would unfortunately decrease

In the time of Gretzky, the average number of goals per game was 7.94 and in the league this year it was only a little over seven.

In the modern NHL, stars are not given an "untouchable" status, where in the old NHL, if you so much as hooked Greztky, Messier, etc., then you were in for a huge beating.

This is also the reason why Crosby or Ovechkin are both unlikely to ever break any of The Great Ones Records.

No. He would probably have been able to get a lot of assists, but Gretzky rarely scored breakaway goals. Plus, the goalie equipment is bigger, the defencemen are bigger and better, and there's a lot closer checking. And there still is a trap in hockey (check out the way the Ducks are playing the finals), which teams would have used to stop Gretzky from taking advantage of the two-line pass.

The game was so much more wide open back then. Players equipment including goaltenders was much smaller. There was much more open space, clutching and grabbing was not an issue. Gretzky wouldn't come close to 92 in todays game. They are trying the elimination of the 2 line pass rule to open up the game, and it is still not where it was back in the 80's.

I dont think so, but he probably would have scored lots anyways. of course it remains to be seen who does score that many goals with the two line pass rule. lol :)
