666 was actually the numeric equivalent of the emperor Nero Cesar, who at the time the book of revelations was written, was the leader and oppressor of Rome. The Book of revelations was written to give other Xtians a sense of hope in the return of Christ, and to point a finger at the evil one ruling at the time. Consequently, every era seems to think that their time is the end of times, and their evil ruler (Stalin, Hitler, George W. Bush) was THE anti Christ.
