Sometimes I talk to people and there are long pauses when I talk. I sound retarded when I talk to people. Or when the words come out,for example, instead of saying "there", I say "they". I don't know why I'm misusing words and stuttering. Confidence maybe? Or when I am leaving a message for someone, I forget what I want to say and there is a long pause...Instead I say umm. Please help me sound intelligent. This happens when I am talking to people who make me nervous. I am usually very articulate and my words flow.

I kind of have the same problem.
1. try calming down. I noticed when I get to excited I stutter or use the wrong words more.
2. Say what you are about to say in your head first. I notice this helps me when I am mad a lot.
3. Try to find time when you are not stuttering and figure out what you are doing that is helping you. For me it is eating for some reason I never stutter while chewing.
4. Remember to error is OK and you don't sound as stupid as you think you do. Getting upset about it is going to make it worse.

That doesn't really sound like stuttering to me. Stuttering is when you try to get a certain sound out and it comes out like h-h-h-h-h-h-h-h-h-h-hello! It does sound a little like a self-confidence issue, instead. It could be that you are getting all keyed up and nervous in advance of talking. If your words usually flow well unless you are faced with someone who makes you nervous.......what about them makes you nervous? Before you talk to anybody, just remember, you are just as good and just as important as they are. Your opinions are just as valuable as theirs are. If you are leaving a message, be fully prepared as to what you want to say. Write it down if you have to and read it off. They won't know the difference. Speak slowly and clearly, and think one thought at a time. Don't get your brain too far ahead of your mouth.

1.Read aloud
2. Before leaving a message write down what you want to say. This will help when the person answers as well.
3. Do not try and say everything at once. Let people respond so you have an opportunity to gather your thoughts.
4. Do not try to sound intelligent be yourself.

my friend has a stutter. yet he never stutters when he is talking to me. that is becasue this is when he is most relaxed, and is more confident around me than other people. one way to fix this is to boost your confidence and practice. practice saying words you have trouble saying. also before you start speaking on the phone go over in your mind what you want to say. as some once said 'Practice makes perfect.' I hope it gets better.

Hey there! Hey I have the same problem, and what you need to do is just s--l--o--w down thats what everyone tells me, i start talking and then i get too fast and no one can understand me, or what i am saying, I know what your going thru, TRUST ME I DO!! try not to get or be so nervous around people, be your self but, slow down dont get nervous and talk fast, everyone gets on my case all the time, it hard for me as well, words are easy on a computer but you talk to a person face to face and its a tad different I KNOW!! so my advice to you is SLOW DOWN!!

Try to think about what you want to say before saying it. Also don't talk too fast. Be confident. If your confident about yourself, then others will view you as you view yourself, an intelligent human being. Good Luck!!!

You will probably have to find your own way of calming your nerves. When you have to talk to someone who intimidates you or makes you nervous, just remember to take deep breaths and slow your brain down so that your mouth can keep up.

That usually happens to me when my brian is going faster than my mouth. Or when you're more worried about how you're sounding than what you're saying.
