I work in an inner-city library and it is so damn frustrating the number of kids who come in and who ONLY want to play games on the computer! They don't want to read, that would be too DULL! The parents don't even come in with the kids and they won't get them library cards! Why don't these parents get involved... come with their kids to the library, read with them, etc? And I know that some days they work, but even on weekends we have almost NO PARENTS up here! AUGHHH!

Some people don't want to risk their children being smarter than them. I'll give you an example. My sister teaches high school, and she had a student that's extremely bright, but her redneck parents didn't encourage her. Despite this negative reinforcement, this kid managed to maintain an A average. My sis tried every thing she could to get this girl into a college. She paid the application fees for three universities, lined up financial aid, you name it. Her senior year, this girl's folks took out a second loan on their trailer to buy a brand new Mustang. They offered it to their daughter as a bribe to drop out of high school and work full time. That was a year ago, she drives the Mustang, is pregnant, and works at Subway. This incident almost made my sister change careers, it hurt her so bad. She even asked those parents why they wouldn't encourage their daughter to go to school. Their reply? Quote "She has no business going to college and trying to be better than us!" Can you believe that? I think some parents are afraid that if their kids get a degree, they will somehow use it against them or lord it over them. It makes me sad just writing about it.

Unfortuantely, the education system has turned reading and writing into a horrendous chore rather than a joy. I love reading, but after being forced to endure The Scarlett Letter, Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man, The Stranger, Grapes of Wrath etc, I don't even think about picking up "classics" anymore. I read non-fiction or Sci-Fi/Fantasy or romance.

If it makes you feel any better, many people just no longer go to libraries. I prefer to buy my books, so that I can re-read them whenever I want. My roommate reads books online. We both borrow and share with friends.

The parents could be on drugs, alcoholics, or maybe just a one parent household.

The mother or father could be holding 2-3 jobs and do not have time which could be the case to instruct their child.

Some do not care or have the resources.

You can make a difference with YOURSELF, and make a little class that each kid should be required to have a library card, have a little group reading session, homework, and THEN go have computer fun.

I believe that is how they were raised when they were a child. And maybe those parents dont even realize what they are doing...although most parents these days are like that and it is very sad to see this.....because when those kids who are playing games instead of reading will most likely do the same thing when they have kids.
