Water is coming out of the secondary drain as think the primary drain is clogged. I want to unclog the drain but i am not sure if the probmlem is with the AC unit or in the actual PVC drain pipe. Is it advisable to open the unit and check the primary drain pan for cloggs or is usually a problem with in the pipes?

What i do is open the panel with the evaporator in it.(make sure power is off first of course) Use a shop vac if you have too much water in the pan and use a tool called a Gallo Gun. I beleive Home Depot carries it but if not, your local plaumbing supply house has it. It uses CO2 charges to blast out clogs in condensate drains. Once the clog is removed, you can use a strong household cleaner and clean out the pan and pipe. The plumbing supply store also will sell a tablet you an put in the pan to inhibit bacteria growth.

It is probably the drain pipe. For some reason, AC and ice sink drains grow bacteria that forms a gel type substance. I would go from the drain pan and blow out the pipe. You can use a compressor or a small diameter hose that will fit into the drin hole in the pan. Then pour a bleach and water solution through the pipe from the pan.
