Let's say you're assigned two siblings with Fetal Alcohol Syndrome. They are born 2 years apart. Let's say that their IQ is under 60 due to the mom's abuse. Let's say the mother is pregnant again, and you can reasonably assume she's still drinking and will continue to be irresponsible.
Can you report this as abuse to the authorities? If so, do doctors report FAS when they see it? If not, then why is giving alcohol to a newborn considered abuse if an 8-month pregnant mother can drink?

Absolutely call Child Protective Services. In their eyes, that would be considered abuse and they would probably open an investigation on the mother. I don't know why some doctors don't report FAS as abuse. They certainly should. Maybe they're just being lazy. A lot of them don't want to take the time to go out of their way.

Doctor's say that a glass of wine every now and then is ok for the baby, but not to drink it to the point where your children are born with fetal alcohol syndrome. Yes that is abuse. If the mother can not stop drinking, then she has a problem and it should be reported to child services. Especially if two of her children already have it. Here's a couple question to ask yourself to, do the children look like they are being fed enough, are there any signs of bruising or abuse of that sort, all in all do they look like they are being taken care of. If you feel this type of concern for these kids then you do what you feel is best for them. Good luck.

It depends on the state unfortunately and what each one deems to be the starting point of life. You can try to report the abuse and in some states they will put the mother in jail or sentence her to detox, but in alot of places it's not legally a baby until the whole baby is born....that's why partial birth abortions are such a big deal. It's killing a baby just because it's whole body didn't make it out of the vaginal before being stabbed to death.

Boy this question makes me so mad and it is not your fault. I am not a narrow minded person but after giving birth too two children with FAS it looks like someone would be watching this mother (?) a little more closely. It is abuse and it is cruel. Report this as soon as you can.

It sure as hell should be.

They don't consider it abuse because then you would have to consider a fetus a life, much to the dismay of the pro-choicers. ( Which I am one of, by the way).

However, they are taking away babies that are born with drug addictions in some states. Not much, but a starting point.

I don't think docs can report it due to confidentiality. But if you have proof or worries, then you can report to CPS.

BTW, who gives alcohol to a newborn? Aside from a bris with ONE drop of wine?

I would definitely report this. I think it is child abuse, but I'm not sure if the legal system sees it that way.

I dont see why it wouldnt be considered it. I completely understand what you mean, What is the difference? There really is no difference, and that mother shouldnt have kids at all. I would definatly see what can be done about this.Good luck
