Despite what the names would imply, the Core 2 Duo is not simply a second generation of Core Duo, it is a brand new technology. Core Duos are still based on the old NetBurts architecture that the old Pentium 4s were based on, or for laptop purposes that the Pentium Ms were based on. Core 2 Duos are based on brand new Core Microarchitecture, so their is actually a very significant difference, with the Core 2 Duos being much better.

Yea, Core Duo's are the first generation, and were put in laptops. Core 2 Duo's are usually in desktops, but the Merom core goes into a laptop, while the Allendale, Conroe, and Yonah cores usually go into desktops. Also the Core Duo's had 1mb per cpu, and the Core 2's share the cache instead of divying it up 1mb per cpu.
