If you want to make a cold process soap you do need the lye, fats, eo etc. And NO you cant get these at micheals.

You can get the lye online ONLY.

The fats you can get from your grocery store. Fats are olive oil, coconut oil, etc.

Essential oils or fragrance oils (which are cheaper) you can get online. Go to www.brambleberry.com for all you soaping needs.

Please note that if you wish to make MP soaps (melt and pour) you Can get the ingredients from micheals. Just go in that little section, take the stuff home, melt it down in your microwave, add scent, color and fragrance, let harden, then use!

Are you just starting the craft? If you are new at soap making, I suggest getting some of the ready-made soap bars that you melt down in your microwave and pour into molds, then you can add color, oils, scents, etc.
Michael's Craft Store does have these basic supplies, however, if you are looking specifically for lye, fat, etc. I dont think they carry those items usually... but you may be able to ask for them to order some for you.

The soap base from Crafts stores you need to read the ingredients list. Many of them are petro base full of cancer causing agents... Just read...join a soap makers group... I myself will be collecting my oils and the Lye I here you can get at home centers such as Lowes ...the oils at cash and carries...walmart...sams club...Costco.... A site called millers soaps is quit helpful...A good place to buy the soap base the best I have found so far is Bramble Berry up in Bellingham. That's where I and alot of others purchase supplies.

Lye can be purchased at Lowes hardware stores. The brand name is Roebic and it comes in 2 lb containers for around $7.00. If you are buying lye, make sure that the ingredient list says "100% pure sodium hydroxide". Anything else isn't lye, just drain cleaner. YES lye is a drain cleaner.

It's amazing the number of suppliers for the items you need to make soap, that there are on line. You won't find what you want at any regular craft store. Do a web search for 'soap making supplies'. You'll surely find a site that has what you want.
