My nephew is 12 and he really likes this girl and has been begging me and my husband to take them somewhere and do a "double date" with them. But my question is do you think letting a 12 year old go on a date is allowable or should we wait. He is smart, and very mature for his age, and the girl is the same way... they are both 12... P.s she is our neighbors neice.

What a nice young nephew! I can see nothing wrong in inviting this girl to go with you on a family day out. 12 does sound a bit young, but I don't think you should discourage or forbid. Better to keep any eye on the situation and be prepared to answer questions from them in a caring and honest way. I remember having a boyfriend at the age of 12, and my parents even took him on holiday with us. They allowed us to hold hands and waited whilst we kissed each other goodnight - at a discreet distance.

I don't see anything wrong with pre-teens and maybe early teenagers going on something like a date. For example having the parents drop them off at the mall or a movie. But not an "official" date. I would say we he becomes of driving age, it would be ok to date.

If they are ready to "date" and going to be escorted by you the whole time, what is the problem with the two of them socializing? Are you troubled by the idea that he is suggesting hanging out with a girl or that he has called it a "date," which might imply something more hot and heavy than he might be ready for? It isn't as though he is asking to be dropped off with the little lady at a motel with a box of condoms and a carton of smokes.

The law was laid down at 16 in my house ... it kept me out of troulbe and not worrying about STD's, High School Drama, Rumors ... etc ... so I'm sticking with 16 for my children ... group dates maybe by 14 -15 with supervision ... kids seem to grow up a lot faster these days ... !

The age is not as important as the method he is using to get his way.
If you have taught him that if he begs and pesters, he will eventually wear you down and you'll cave, then you will cave, and don't need to be wasting anymore of his valuable time.
I think a double date is a fun idea, but I would tell him that if he begs or pesters me anymore, then not only will he not go, but he will start losing stuff/privileges.
Then stick to your guns, and it is YOUR decision, and not a matter of how much he can nag you.

i would try to tell the 12 yr old it is not a date it is just going somewhere with a friend thats the opposite sex. i would not let them "date" however having supervised play dates is fine.

I do not feel it is a good idea s this leads to other temptations. Maybe he needs to place his interest in other things like working out or video games. It is really up to his mom or you if you are his care taker. I hope you will do what is best for him, good luck.

I see nothing wrong with the kids going to a movie with adult suppervision. It really isn't a date. Just kids going to a movie or something. I don't think any kid male or female should date until 16.
