Living in Alaska, we see the aurora borealis several times every winter, but I've always wondered what it looks like from above - or even from space? Anyone know?

Probably an aurora. There was a display in Michigan on Monday night, but it was - as you say - splotchy and faint and pretty much colorless. From here it looked more like light pollution than what I remember as good auroral displays in my experience. ADDED: Sounds like it was more spectacular up north of here (I am in the suburban Detroit area). You may be seeing the tail end of a pretty significant solar storm event.

I don't think it would look the same, most likely dimmer because you would only see the light reflected off the earth through it rather than from the millions of stars in space.

They look just like they do from Earth, only suspended over the globe of the Earth instead of hanging in the sky.

You can't see it from above.. You can only see it from below because of the way the diffusion of light through the natural gases in the atmosphere. Above just looks as it normally would
