The air conditioning compressor is not working in my car (so says my bf's uncle). It is a 1999 Chevy prism. Should I bother trying to get it fixed (expensive?) or should I just start looking at a new car?

Take your car to a reputable repair shop (ask around) and have them tell you exactly what is wrong. It may be something a lot less expensive.

If your boy friend and/or his uncle is handy enough, you should be able to pick up a used compressor relatively cheap. Maybe they will install it for you.

If the cost is less than $1500 and warranity for 1 year at least, fix it.

A car should at least run for 10 years
