I have never felt threatened in any way in Greece...never. Walking alone or with a group. As for cost, I have found that you can find expensive or less so like you do in the states you just have to shop like any where else. I do know that more smaller shops are closed in August for they all close for holidays then to go to beaches etc. (makes parking easier though) This is in Athens anyway. The stores were open up north in the resort areas though.
Flying there in July/Aug is more expensive. I paid 400 usd more on tickets this year than I paid the last 2 years to go and I arrive July 1st. I had booked couple months at least early too but the cheaper flights on same flights were already booked by then. You didn't mention what country you were flying out of or perhaps if driving. I am from the States.

Greece is just a splendid country. I've been to Skiatos island last year to a great beach where Lady Di used to go. It was great! The best time of my life. Don't worry about safety, Greece is safe anywhere, anytime. I would suggest going there on august or early september because otherwise july is very very hot.

The best time is early September because the mass tourists are gone, the ocean is at its best temperature, the restaurant staff aren't so stressed out anymore! Travelling is probably safer than in many other countries but just be on the look out and use your common sense! The islands are safer than Athens but that goes for everywhere, small places are always safer than big cities! I found places to stay for as cheap as 25 Euros, 2 people on many islands without looking much as they come to the ferry terminals! Don't dress rich, no jewellery and you won't have any problems worldwide!

September is a good time cuz the prices are lower and the weather is better too, not too hot, not to cold.
Remember that if you come to Greece during the Summer you should brink a lot of money.
A good place is Athens cuz you have everything you want right next to were you stay and there is free internet in Syntagma square. Lots of sights to see and good prices
But it's more crowded than summer.

Greece is one of the safest countries in Europe (low crime, peaceful people). Best time May-June and September-October.
Greece can be affordable and yet very expensive depending on your taste. On a low budget, count ~ 15-20 euros for accommodation and about the same for food per day. Once you settle down in a place, you may manage with less.

I've travelled there extensively and regardless of your budget you will have a great time. Make sure to make and confirm any reservations from your country as it will probably be cheaper (especially accommodation). Confirm everything and then confirm again. Get it in writing. I have found that travelling there after the 15th of August is the best time. Its not too hot and all the riff raff have usually departed.
In so far as safety is concerned do the same that you would do in your country.

It's always safe. As for good time, June and September are quieter and cheaper. July and mostly August are more crowded and warmer. It's your pick. As for a good place to visit, I'd suggest 3 days in Athens and then go to Paros or Siphnos.

Greece is safe to visit any time. From Winter to Summer... I suggest you to visit Syphnos. But if you like to go to parties and so on you must go to Mykonos. If you like the Agrotourism idea, then visit Thrace or East Macedonia! Alternative tourism offers great fun
