I grew up in NYC and was told it really happened. But I'm just curious as to actual proof. Call me skeptical....

The story of The Amityville Horror can be traced back to a real life murder case in Amityville in November 1974, when Ronald DeFeo, Jr. shot dead six members of his family at 112 Ocean Avenue. In December 1975 George and Kathy Lutz and their three children moved into 112 Ocean Avenue but left after twenty-eight days, claiming to have been terrorized by paranormal phenomena produced by the house. Jay Anson's novel is said to be based on these events but has been the subject of much controversy.

I grew up on Long Island, not far from Amityville, when all this crap started about the son hearing voices. The killing was apparently true, however all the haunted house shite, is a complete farce. I saw the original movie at the drive-in in Coram, Long Island. And then went to amityville to see the house, and get a picture. And this part is true, if I'm lying, I'm dying, the camera took a real grizzly picture of the house, and the rear end blew up in my dad's 74 impala on the Long Island Expressway on the way home. It was ******' scary at the time. My sister was shitting gold bricks...too funny

Parts of it are. There really was a Lutz family who moved into a house where the previous family had been murdered. The address is in fact in Amityville at 112 Ocean Avenue. The family moved out claiming it was haunted, but none of the things they experienced have been proven. Try reading the book "The Amityville Horror: A True Story" from 1977.

OK some of you need to do your home work, all of it happen I was there, I grew up in Massapequa, witch is right near Amityville, it was like a bad dream when the murders happen, then when the Lutzs moved in it was like a circus, they had to station police on the corner of the street, people where coming to the house just to look where the murders happen, then after the Lutzs moved the only ppl there where allowed on the street where the owners of the other houses on the block.

It really wasn't a good scene, and yes the movie added some things but they got most of it right.

There was a murder at the house of the Defeo' by there son Ronnie, who was on drugs. He is in jail for it now. It happened in the 70's. He killed his siblings and parents. Thats true. Then the Lutz's moved in and abandoned the house 28 days later and wrote a book claiming all that creepy stuff happened. They admitted that it was a hoax a few years later, but the legend kind of stuck and made it infamous. I just watched a documentary in Amityville 2 weeks ago on the history channel.

There where Amityville killings yes. A young man called Robert De Foe shot his mother, father, 2 sisters and 2 brothers. It had nothing to do with the "supernatural" though. He is in jail still serving time.

The first murders were real where the kid killed his family and said that the voices in his head told him to do it. So I'm sure there were bad vibes in that house or something.

However, all the things you saw in the movie were probably hyped up to make it more convincing. I did not see the new one. People who lived there after that family moved out never admitted to having any problems.

My friend's daughter and her husband almost bought that house at one time. He was being transferred there but the school district wasn't to their liking so they went elsewhere.

They say parts of it did but most of the things were made up...in fact people have said for years none of it was true.

But I think inspiration fueled this wild story, A creaky floor or noises outside made the background for a good movie.

so Yes the house inspired a horror movie

No the house never bled or swallowed anyone up.

I watched the feature on the dvd that went to the house and gave the history of it, and certain parts of it were true, while others were completely fabricated. Man did that movie give me the creeps!

The people who lived in the house say it happened. I heard a rumor that they made up the story because they had problems making their mortgage payment.
