John's height increased from 5'2" to 5'7" during the psast year. What is the rate of increase (to the nearest whole percent) of John's hight over the past year?

I know that when finding rate I need to Rate x base = amount
My question is I am stuck on which one is the base and which one is the amount?
I think that 5'7" is the base and 5'2" is the amount am I correct or am I looking at this completely wrong?

might be easier to figure when converting to inches

5'2" = 62in
5'7" = 67in

increase = 67-62 = 5
rate of increase = 5/62 (*100) = 8%

Rate is your unknown percentage - base is the 5'2" - and amount is 5'7"
With the heights converted to inches, the formula of yours would read -

X * 62 = 67
/62 = /62
X = 1.08 (rounded)
Once you take off the whole number of ONE (since you are only looking for the percent of increase) you are left with 8%

Put them in inches. 5'2" is 62 inches, and 5'7" is 67 inches. So the rate of increase is 5 inches per year. In percentages, that is 5/62 % growth per year.

rate = (change in height) / (change in time)
= ( +5 inches ) / (1 year) = 5 in/yr

% rate of increase = ( 5 in/yr ) / (62 in) = 0.080645... /yr
= 8% /yr rounded.
