1000 cm seems very big for a garden decoration - that's 10 metres = +/- 10 yards = 30 feet. Maybe it should have read 100 cm or 1000 mm. Metres & centimetres are used in Europe (& elsewhere) so while a foreign product may have it's instructions translated into English, the measurements remain metric. As every level of measurement (millimetre, centimetre, metre, kilometre) has a relationship based on 10: - 10 millimetres in a centimetre, 100 (10x10) centimetres in a metre etc. This is much easier to calculate than 12 " = 1', 3' = 1 yard, 1760 yards = 1 mile. Metrication is not going to go away, so it's best to make it as easy as possible. You may wish to write up a quick reference table to keep. This could show eg 10 mm = 1 cm, 100 cm = 1 metre, 1000 mm = 1 metre, 1000 metres = 1 kilometre. This may sound silly, but it can prevent difficulties - is that polar bear really 1000 cm ? at least you will know enough to question the size with confidence. Unless you are measuring very accurately you can get a fair conversion quite easily. 1 metre = 1 yard plus a bit (39.4 inches) 30 cm = 1 foot minus a bit (11.75 inches) For miles and kilometres, you can get a rough idea fairly easily for short distances. For long distances you need to be more accurate : - Short distances - 1 mile = 2 kilometres Long distances - 5 miles = 8 kilometres Oh, I went to school in the 60s. I can still recite my times tables accurately, but often prefer to write down the metric lengths to be sure to get the correct number of zeroes. You might feel old & daft doing that but not as old and daft as you would feel if you make a huge mistake and order 10 times what you need.!!
