This question came up yesterday. There are several good reasons for legalizing marijuana -- legitimate medical uses, less crime, government regulation and taxation (making MJ a money-maker), etc. However, it would create more problems than it would solve -- traffic accidents would go way up because people would drive stoned (don't try to tell me it doesn't happen -- I come from a family of cops and have heard all the stories of stoners driving and getting in accidents or killing innocent people), workman's comp claims would go way up because people would try to work while stoned, the countless lives ruined by addiction when people lose their jobs, their home, their families, etc. Many people labor under the misapprehension that alcohol puts you at higher risk for addiction or some type of impairment accident, and that's not true. Stoners pull risky stunts just like drunks do. The end result is innocent people would end up paying for all the disasters caused by stoners, and all that money the Federal Government would make taxing it would go into rehab for the stoners and assistance for those who were financially harmed by a stoner's actions. It doesn't work well either way, so the lesser of the two evils is to keep marijuana illegal.

With more than 40yrs. of experience with cannabis,I can safely say that the laws concerning 'pot' came as a result of corp.lobbyists stirring up racist fears in order to get the 'anti-cannabis' laws passed. Hemp was a huge cash crop early 1900's. When nylon was invented, it's main competition was HEMP ! Powerful lobbyists for the DuPont Co. and the timber interests, and with the Hearst newspaper empire to spread propaganda, the public was deceived out of any meaningful discussion of the facts ! There is NO reason that cannabis couldn't be regulated like alcohol or nicotine. If the 'pot-smoking' public, over 21,wanted pot, they'd go to the liquor store to get it. Most all of them would choose to go to a legal outlet, just as all of us go to the liquor store to get booze. Sure you'd have a few that would insist on growing their own,but the 'black-market' would be gone. I don't see 'moon-shine' being a 'national' problem, and the same for pot. Contrary to poular belief, growing pot isn't that easy, and most potheads buy their weed now, that's not gonna change one bit ! Legalisation of pot will go a long way in stopping the underground drug trade. We'll have more police effort on hard drugs and weapons, not on old hippies gettin' high, and cancer patients with their states legal right to med.pot ! Hemp helped to make this country what it is today ! 'Old Ironsides' was made of only three things...
..OAK,..IRON,..and,..HEMP !

yes, its nothing more than a processed plant. Everything else is processed and legal why not legalize it. Vodka is made from potatoes so what's the difference. Shout out to Kurt Schmoke the old mayor of Baltimore. He wanted to legalize it but he failed but i thank him for trying.

With keen understanding & ethno-botanical knowledge, Mother Nature provides plants for both medicine & entertainment by the thousands!!!
Does it honestly make sense to impose legal persecution of only one variety of a species that numbers hundreds of its own, and is probably one of the most sublime of the bunch???
I, for one, vote for amnesty of this misunderstood plant, as well as all the folks in jails because of this stupidity--and keep the governmental BS out of our herbal business! OOOOh poor babies that don't get to control something of our lives--boohoo! Such a shame, huh? LOL LOL LOL
For those who are simply on the anti-drug bandwagon without knowledge of realities...plants are not drugs--never were--people make drugs, pharmaceutical companies make drugs...and as long as the FDA says okay, so do you??? Guess what! Your ignorance maintains the ridiculous--the FDA okays drugs & products that are barely tested, and will release for profits sake, these ingestable poisons to you ,the unbeknownst consumer, even if they have proven to maim or kill 50% of lab animals they did test with!!! And because Doc Wonder says "Take these!", you do...yoo hoo!!! Any brains in gear out there???
Thanks for the chance to rant!!! Spark one up for me!!! LOL

I think we need to ask if we are a country of strong individuals or do we need a nanny state to protect us from ourselves!
The marijuana movement has relied on the wrong party to help them!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Conservatives can be convinced that marijuana is more a liberty issue than a public safety issue. Liberals will never force a change because then the pot smokers won't be driven to vote for them.

I think it should be legalized. I don't smoke it. I do know people with a prescription. It needs to be regulated and taxed and profitted from like alcohol is now. My vote is Legalize it.

Yes I do..it would solve a lot of problems, create more tax revenue that could maybe be used to pay off the deficit.....besides the govt should have no right to tell me I cannot smoke a plant

Why do people care? Look at it like this, is it hard to come by? Would it really make a difference if it was legal? and no it shouldn't be legal.

Yes. Marijuana is not dangerous enough to be considered a public health issue. In fact, it's probably more dangerous to make it illegal because it may lead people to think other illegal drugs are harmless too.
