Did you evacuate the lines before recharging the system? A/Cs work on the condition that a compressed gas has a way to expand. You must evacuate the system (create a vacuum inside the lines) before adding the refrigerant. If you simply added refrigerant without evacuating the system, it won't work, and you'll put undue stress on your compressor.

Did you replace the o-rings with the proper ones, AND lube them before assembly? They are easy to pinch, and using any other sizes than what it is designed for will invite leaks. Hearing a "gas" sound is confusing..it may be simply leaking back out.
Now..to charging..your system is one unit. The low side port is before the compressor, and the high after. IT DOES NOT MATTER WHICH PORT YOU CHARGE AS LONG AS THE SYSTEM IS OFF. Both ports lead into the system..and the freon is carried by the pump in a continous cycle.
Generally, you charge the low side, as the pressures never get that high while the car is running. NEVER attach a can to the high side while the vehicle's A/C system is on. 300psi back into a can rated for 120-ish will hurt.
I agree with the other gentleman, as far as introducing freon into a vacuum. There should be no air or moisture in the lines and components when you charge it. But..it will still work, even with air inside. Just not as well. The air will simply compress, and reduce the effectiveness. (Possibly shorten the life as well).
I recommend reclaiming any freon you may still have in the system, and double check your work. After fixing..have a vacuum drawn on the system for a minimum of 20 min. to boil the moisture out, and try the recharge again.
