BeachSaint is correct.
"Lyra lives in a world where people's souls are separate from their bodies. These souls, or "daemons", take the form of small animals such as cats, snakes, rats, and monkeys. Every human has a daemon, and to lose one's daemon is the greatest tragedy that can befall a person. People don't even touch each other's daemons."

There is also debate on how "fixed" the daemons are; do they fix themselves as certain animals at adolescence and stay with the individual for life?

The original meaning of the word "Daemon" is Celtic for "Guardian" or "Watcher". In UNIX (computer language) it's a piece of code that "watches" and reports back to you if a "packet" doesn't go through (like an email).
In the His Dark Materials stories, the Daemons are the souls of the people. In Lyra's world, they take on animal forms that reflect the character or their position in life (like anyone who's daemon is a dog, be it German Shepherd or Chihuahua, is in a service position). I think it was the second book that she meets a boy from our dimension and thinks he must be lonely without a daemon, until she realizes that his is on the inside.
In those books, the daemon can change according to need until the child matures and the daemon "settles" on a form.

"A dæmon is a physical manifestation of the soul of a conscious person in the Philip Pullman trilogy His Dark Materials. Many characteristics of a dæmon match the concepts from other cultures or psychology."

never read the books, but by the description you give sounds like another word for a "Familiar". its a creature that is supposed to always be by you, protect you (some what), and have a telepathic link to you. kind of like a pet from another world.
i think.

It's a computer term for a computer program that has a specific function, usually some form of security or maintenance. I think it tends to be an automatic program that runs of its own accord. If you like the concept try "SnowCrash" it deals with that concept some (Cyber-punk...sorta).

Well, I'm not sure if by 'deamon' you mean 'demon.' In Christian culture, demons are sort of like the Devil's angels, doing his bidding here on earth.

it is one of Satan's workers that goes around and temps you to sin. you have never experienced Satan tempting though. it would be crazy. and you are usually always being tempted by them. they can even tempt you through friends and family. I am a christian and whenever i am scared at night or somewhere or i feel there presence i say,
In the name of Jesus Christ my Lord and Savior go away. in the Bible it says they hate His name ssoo much they flee.
