Biodegradable waste is a little recognised resource. Through correct waste management, often using the two key processes of anaerobic digestion and composting, it can be converted into valuable products.

Anaerobic digestion converts biodegradable waste into several products, including biogas, which can be used to generate renewable energy or heat for local heating, and soil amendment (digestate). Composting is the process of producing compost through aerobic decomposition of biodegradable organic matter. The decomposition is performed primarily by aerobes, although larger creatures such as ants, nematodes, and oligochaete worms also contribute. This decomposition occurs naturally in all but the most hostile environments, such as within landfills, extremely arid deserts or cold weather such as boreal winters or polar regions, which prevent the microbes and other decomposers from thriving.

They are also used to produce energy because of the methane gas that is produced when it is degrading. Methane is produced as trash decomposes. When released into the air, it is a greenhouse gas and contributes to local smog conditions. By recycling methane gas, landfill gas-to-energy project recovers sufficient energy to heat the equivalent of 15,000 homes per year.

The two main ways they are utilized to produce energy are through decomposition where they give off methane (NOT Natral Gas which is a mixture of methane, ethane, propane, and small amounts of hydrogen and butane) as a byproduct of the bacterial decomposition of the objects and then burning the methane to power steam turbines,
and simple burning of the raw materials in incinerators to power steam turbines.

They are mostly used to SAVE energy by recycling. Paper and cardboard for example are recycled and thus save the energy required to cut down and process trees for new paper.
